SUPPORT THE FASHION ACT

The Fashion Act S.7428 (Biaggi) / A.8352 (Kelles) is a groundbreaking piece of legislation that will require mandatory social and environmental due diligence from the fashion industry.

WHAT WOULD THE LAW DO?

  1. Mandate that companies know and disclose their supply chains

  2. Require companies to be responsible for their impact in those supply chains, through the legally binding Mandatory Due Diligence Framework

    • Require companies to set and achieve climate reductions in line with the Paris Agreement. (Science Based Targets)

    • Require companies to work with their suppliers to effectively manage their chemical use.

    • Measurably improve the lives of garment workers.

  3. Regulations and Enforcement

    • Companies found to be out of compliance and which do not remedy within three months of notice of non compliance may be fined up to 2% of annual revenue.

    • These funds will be used for the benefit of workers and communities directly injured and environmental benefit projects.

    • Fashion companies will also be held jointly and severally liable for lost wages of the garment workers in their supply chains.

HELP PASS THE FABRIC ACT

The Fashioning Accountability and Building Real Institutional Change Act (FABRIC Act) is a proposed federal legislation that would establish fair wage protections for US garment workers, level the playing field for responsible apparel manufacturing, and incentivize and grow domestic garment production.

It’s 5 key tenants are:

  1. Enforcing minimum wage standards and eliminating wage theft in US garment factories.

  2. Creating a $40 million domestic garment manufacturing grant program aimed at revitalizing the industry.

  3. Increasing accountability on brands and retailers to combat workplace violations.

  4. Increasing transparency with a federal garment factory registry.

  5. Incentivizing reshoring with tax credits.

Remake Our World explains the importance of this act super well, read what they have to say here.

SUPPORT A FOSSIL FUEL FREE FASHION INDUSTRY

By outsourcing production to polluting factories in places like China, Vietnam, Turkey, and Bangladesh, fashion brands avoid responsibility for their role in the climate crisis.

The production of synthetic fibres for the textile industry currently accounts for 1.35% of global oil consumption. This exceeds the annual oil consumption of Spain.

Add your name to Stand.Earth’s #FilthyFashion campaign calling on fashion companies to commit to phasing out fossil fuels from their supply chains by 2030.

Also support the Fossil Fuel Free Non-Proliferation Treaty which calls for a global transition away from fossil fuels (in every industry).

BUY LESS, PERIOD.

Sustainable fashion isn’t about buying things, it’s a mindset shift away from overconsumption and mass production.

One of the easiest things we can do is buy less. And buy used! We already have so much clothing on the planet, we need to focus on ending hyperconsumption and the constant need for “new”. It’s on brands to produce WAY less too!

No matter what, ask all fashion brands to commit to:

  • paying living wages to garment workers

  • offsetting 100% of their carbon emissions (of entire supply chain)

  • stopping the use of synthetic fabrics (unless recycled)

  • taking responsibility for the end-of-life of their garments
